Health Promoters program
The Health Promoters program is a health promotion and leadership development effort that was developed to train community leaders on health related topics to assure that our community takes responsibility of its health. Thanks to the support of the Minnesota Department of Health, the Bush Foundation and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation, the program has grown in 2002-03 to include the communities of Owatonna, Waseca, Montgomery and Grass Camp.
Each agricultural season, migrant communities select leaders to be Health Promoters that will function as an informational resource and bridge between health institutions and the migrant and Latino/a community. Promoters are required to attend twice/week training. All are certified in CPR and First Aid. Other specialized training includes information on:
- Diabetes
- Workplace injuries and accidents
- High blood pressure
- Cancer
- Second hand smoke
- Drugs/alcohol
- Sexually transmitted diseases
- HIV/AIDS
- Immunization
Health promoters learn and act. Each promoter is required to complete community encounters each week around the issues of health. These one-to-one conversations build relationships and bring out important health-related concerns of the community.
