Gaylord Residents Report that Police Profiling continues in Gaylord!

Public Demonstrations to continue-

Centro Campesino continues to work with Latino residents in Gaylord Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Human Rights will be starting a formal investigation of the allegations made by our members against the city, the police department and Gaylord’s police officer Erik Boon.

On Friday April 3, Centro Campesino met with Gaylord’s city officials in a failed mediation meeting. Centro Campesino was not able to reach an agreement and we have to continue with our struggle in Gaylord. Community members would rather lose a battle with dignity than to negotiate meaningless outcomes.

Community members have reported that officer Boon continues to target them, issuing tickets and committing numerous civil rights violations in the process. We are concern about the situation in Gaylord. A Gaylord resident commented that the city and the police department are not taking this issue seriously and they are not being proactive at finding an end to Boon’s abuses.

We are in a critical time when our immigrant communities are being targeted not only by anti-immigrant groups, but also by a felling system where there is no apparent accountability for those reportedly abusing their power to oppress immigrant communities. For instance, we are seeing a similar issue going on in Arizona with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who is currently under investigation by the Justice Department. As we can see, this is a serious problem across the country.

Keep supporting Centro Campesino’s efforts to end the apparent abuses of Officer Eric Boon in Gaylord. Keep contacting city council and urge them to put an end to Boon’s reported abuses and to the racial profiling.

We also invite you to come and support a public demonstration in downtown Gaylord on Friday April 24th at 3:30 p.m.

Thank you for your support,

Victor Contreras
Executive Director
